fashion is cyclical

Back in the days, when I was maybe 6 or 7, my mom bought me those floral Dr. Martens boots. Not to be mean, but my mom always had strange taste in fashion, not to say- bad taste. I still wear the extra-large wool/navy cardigan (who is, by the way, too large yet) that she brought me for pre-maternal private school. I was 5 back then; so I imagined the damn thing was probably a monk-suit for me.

She had something for Dr. Martens; once a year she used to bring me at Browns to purchase them like it was some kind of a yearly ritual. What she used to say, is that it was quality and chic. My mom always thought she dressed me chic with plaided Scottish fall coats, Dr. martens shoes, stockings, and french beret. I remember how I could do anything not to wear those bad boys. I completely loathed them. No kids were wearing them; and As always; i was the outcast Chinese child who was mocked by other kids.

Now that I see that Dr. Martens has been the sign of poster hipster girls for the last year; I couldn't help but wonder about what is fashion? Is it just a way for rich girls to make them feel rebellious for a day? Is this a return of my inner child despise? One thing is certain; fashion is cyclical and everything comes back to trends. So keep your old "punk" plaids pants, your rave-on pacifer, your ugly-ass 10 inch platforms from the time where baby Spice was a style icon. Keep them tidy in your closet; and one day, one day, you'll become the fashion icon you always secretly wanted to be.

  1. I want those. I told you I want those. are you making fun of me now? haha. by the way Scottish plaid coats, Dr. martens, stockings, and french beret = my uniforme as a kid. no kids were wearing them. and I was so blonde back then, older kids were scared of me cause I looked like a girl from children of the damned. where were you? and why do we have the same name? so weird.
